To accelerate the next phase of Triathlon Victoria’s innovation journey, sustainability planning was essential to enable the TRI2gether program scale. Sustainability planning enhanced the program in areas of the marketing, systems and processes, the revenue-cost model and resources.
Sustainability Planning for a New Innovation
TRI2gether is a school-based program that gives secondary school students aged 13 to 17 years the opportunity to get active by participating in swim, bike, run and triathlon.Chase Consulting supported Triathlon Victoria with six-months of innovation mentoring and workshops to develop the sustainability plan and build innovation capability and capacity.
WHAT IS THE INNOVATION QUICK WIN?
Triathlon Victoria’s received innovation seed funding to develop and launch a new program, TRI2gether, that gives secondary school students aged 13 to 17 years the opportunity to get active by participating in swim, bike, run and triathlon.The TRI2gether Program was co-designed and piloted with several Victorian in the 12 months, with seed funding support.
The 12 months of the program delivered excellent outcomes for the secondary students involved; developing new life skills of resilience and goal setting, learning new physical activities that improved health and wellbeing.
From an innovation “minimum viable product” perspective, the TRI2gether Program was successful and validated.
The next phase of Triathlon Victoria’s innovation journey was to develop the sustainability plan, so the program would continue past the end of the seed funding and is sustainable from a financial perspective and also from a resource and ambassador perspective.
WHAT WERE THE OUTCOMES AND IMPACTS?
To develop the sustainability plan, we:- Created the business model for the TRI2gether program.
- We developed, tested and validated the revenue cost model so that the program was financially sustainable
- We develop an ambassador partnership model so that the program could be delivered outside of internal staff resources
- We develop the marketing and sales process to manage program opportunities with Victorian schools
- We designed and implemented a CRM system to track all program opportunities
- We develop a new school onboarding process to ensure that all new Tri2gether programs were delivered successfully, and the schools were delighted.
HOW DID THIS FIT IN THE OVERALL STRATEGY?
Triathlon Victoria was established as the governing body for triathlon and multisport in 1984 and oversees and promotes the further development of the sports of triathlon and multisport in Victoria.The TRI2gether Program enables Triathlon Victoria to broaden its programs with non-competitive offering to reach secondary students.
Through the innovation mentoring, we reviewed and recommended actions to enhance program sustainability in areas of personnel, funding, marketing, school partnerships and post-innovation seed funding. Sustainability is essential for TRI2gether to continue post the innovation seed funding.
